What is "Structural Myofascial Release"?
In the last 20 years, recognition of "Myofascia" among health professionals and anatomists has grown significantly. Its role in the function and movement of the body has informed us on ways to look at the body as a whole and see the connection of impact arising from injury, illness, stress, strain and emotion.
Fascia is a connective tissue found throughout the body surrounding muscles, connecting to bone, cartilage and glands, enveloping and weaving all organs. To put it simply, it is like a web that holds the body together allowing it to communicate and for the body to move with fluidity.
"Myofascia" is the system that describes the close relationship of muscle and fascia.
Often when the body is exposed to trauma of any form this will create a domino effect. The body adjusts to accommodate the change. The myofascia can get stuck in this pattern leaving an imprint on the whole structure, manifesting as pain and tightness.
This is where Structural Myofascial Release steps in.
I assess the body through touch and movement, looking for areas that don't have the opportunity to move freely. Working with slow, steady pressure that can range from subtle to very deep, I move the myofascia to where it is less strained. This allows the body to realign itself and can result in great change in the entire body. Lotion is used sparingly, as the goal is to stretch and move the tissue.
It can be very intense or it can be blissfully calming, depending on your preference.
One thing for sure, is that it feels different.
